A few enthusiasts who sailed from Lilliput Yacht Station (Pizeys Yard) got together and formed the Lilliput Sailing Club in 1956. They used a small shed at the yard as the Club premises. The first Annual Dinner was held in 1958. The membership outgrew the facilities at Pizeys and it was a hard task to find a new base.

During the early 1960's the ground where we are now situated was purchased. This time the Clubhouse was a shed (again) on the edge of the Lagoon, The foundation stone of the present building was laid in December 1965 and it was formally opened a year later. The building work, plumbing and electrical installations and decorations were largely undertaken by Club members. This is still the order of the day! New applicants have to commit themselves to do regular tasks and duties when asked, including the laying and servicing all our own moorings. We are proud of the fact that during the 1987 hurricane we did not lose any boats off our swinging moorings!

We crane out about 70 cruisers and store them ashore for the winter, and the sailing dinghies which have the ground for the summer season are removed, except for the hardy chosen few competing in the winter race series.

Since 1956 we have had six Presidents, the current one being Colin Stewart who has served since 2011, and fourteen past Commodores. The first one and founder member was Roy Humphry who served from 1956 to 1974. We have approximately 400 members with 120 cruisers from 17'6" to 30'0" and about 70 dinghies.

The principal object of the club is to promote amateur sailing (excluding power boats). To help keep costs to a minimum we are a self help club and members are expected to assist with maintenance and other duties.

We have a good social programme at the Clubhouse during the winter season. Bar and weekend catering are all run on a voluntary rota basis.

Our Flag Officers, Sailing Secretary and Cruiser and Dinghy Captains play their full part in Poole Harbour yachting activities and with the Harbour Commission. We are represented on Poole Yachting Association and play permanent host to the RNLI Lifeboat crew who are Honorary Members of the Club.
